The 5WR model (5-inch Curved Jaw Locking Pliers with Wire Cutter) had been in the Vise-Grip line for years prior to 2001. In that year, Vise-Grip joined forces with Schrade to develop the 5WR Toolbox, a locking plier multitool. Production ceased a few years later when Schrade closed its doors. Meanwhile the standard non-multitool 5WR is still in production at Irwin Vise-Grip.

Jaws

Jaws are heavy cast steel that has been chrome plated. The upper jaw is welded solid to the upper handle.

There is a serrated gripping area and an anvil type wire cutter.

Handles/Frame

Handles are a much heavier gage of steel than most multitools. Also note that there is no lock release lever as found on other Vise-Grip pliers, making it more difficult to open the pliers when they have been clamped heavily.

Finish is chrome plated steel.

5WR is cast into the plier jaw. VISE GRIP is stamped into one handle, the TOOLBOX logo into the other.

Blades and Tools

  • Plain edge knife blade, Wharnecliffe profile. Has a wire stripper notch at the base. Measures 1-3/4" long. (45mm)
  • Partially serrated knife blade, sheepsfoot profile. Measures 2-1/2" long. (62mm)
  • Folding 1/4" hex bit driver, with magnet
Note only the longer knife blade and bit driver lock open.

Blade Locking Mechanism

A patented locking mechanism engages a slot in the back of the lockable blades. Pressing downwards on a neighboring blade releases the lock.

Other Features

The hex bit driver locks at both 90 and 180 degrees.

Included with the tool was a reversable phillips/flathead screwdriver bit, plus a plastic bit carrier clip with three longer reach bits: medium phillips, large phillips, and large flathead.
