The Gerber Clutch keychain tool was introduced in 2005, along with its sister tool, the Shortcut. The significant difference between these two is that the Clutch features plier jaws, while the Shortcut is scissors based. Both have all outside-opening blades. |

Jaws
The plier jaws are relatively thin, but adequate for such a small tool. Jaws are spring-loaded by means of a hidden spring around the pivot. There are fine serrations near the tips, a gripping area below that, and a small wire cutter area near the pivot.
Handles/Frame
The main frame of the handle is a channel of stainless steel. On each side are scales of anodized aluminum. The Clutch was primarily produced in two colors, Red Tail Hawk and Special Ops Gray. Lightening holes pass through the aluminum scales.
Depending upon which blade was housed in it, one handle channel was stamped along the spine with the word BLADE while the other was stamped NAIL FILE, as a quick reference.

Variations
- The Clutch was commonly produced with either red or gray color anodized scales. In addition, it seems that a small quantity were made with a gold or a dark green finish. (See More Clutch colors)
- Clutch models were also produced with an alternative handle scale. These feature triangular lightening holes instead of round. This alternative model has been noted in grey color only.
